According to P in Hinterlands I, the roads do not make much sense. People say this place is one of the last places with magic, that modern technology/communication weakens magic here.

"The Anthill" is a disconcertingly large anthill. It is unknown why or how it became so big. In the absence of any other interesting location nearby, it became a hangout spot for teenagers with nothing better to do.

Before European colonisation, the Hinterlands were inhabited by a variety of native populations that fought with each other over its ownership. They employed "slash and burn" agriculture, which damaged the soil and turned the region into a desert-like location. After colonisation exterminated the native tribes, the region remained unused for a brief while as the settlers focused on the fertile coastal region to grow sugar cane. As the demand for meat and dairy increased, the inner region was settled. The land became in particular an important salt-harvesting location, as it could be easily mined. The meat was salted for preservation and then shipped off for sale.
The newer inhabitants of the region, despite having no connection to the original native tribes, quickly adopted elements of their culture and customs.
Geographically, the Hinterlands are a large depression, like a dried basin, where saltwater pooled as sea levels decreased. One accesses it from the East and goes down following a spiral-like pattern.
The oldest town in the Hinterlands is Skinned Tapir, where the Hinterlands' First Church is located. It was flooded by unknown means sometime between World War II and the present day. At its prime, the town was the main activity hub in the region. The second oldest town, Drowned Tapir, is currently the largest population center. It was founded during the height of Skinned Tapir's activity and grew in the wake of its flooding. The third town of the Hinterlands is Bloody Goat, which was founded after the destruction of Skinned Tapir. It has an extremely small population (less than 200 inhabitants) and next to no economy aside from offering basic necessities to people working in the salt plains.
Economically, the Hinterlands are struggling to keep up with modern competition. Seasalt-harvesting operations to the north, created in the post-World War II, offer a higher quality product at a greater scale and for a cheaper price. The neighboring regions no longer raise cattle as improvements in refrigeration and logistics have made it feasible to buy dairy and meat from higher quality and cheaper sources.

- Luís Câmara Cascudo in his Geografia dos Mitos Brasileiros (Brazilian Myths' Geography) dubs the interior region of the Brazilian Northeast as "the hinterlands." Despite writing in Portuguese, the use of "the hinterlands," an English term, is notable.
